Displaced people in the DRC

Close to 20,000 newly displaced people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have received aid from the World Food Programme (WFP) that should last a month.

Overall, the agency is currently providing assistance to a total of 532,000 Congolese refugees.

The WFP's Elisabeth Byrs says tens of thousands of people have fled their homes, many seeking refuge near Goma or elsewhere in eastern DRC and thousands more have made the trek across the Rwandan and Ugandan borders in search of security.

"They walk for many days with nothing. Some of them are taking refuge around Goma in the area and they are moving all the time changing location all the time. You have these armed groups coming into the villages at night and we have many, many people and children telling their parents have been killed in front of their eyes and also many women raped."
