UN expert welcomes right to food in Rio+20
"The negotiators on the Rio+20 Outcome Document have acknowledged the important contribution human rights, including the right to food, can make to sustainable development."
The view was expressed by the UN expert on the right to food, Olivier De Schutter.
In a statement Wednesday, De Schutter stressed that "the strong references to the right to food in the outcome document are of special significance."
He said "the right to food has more than just symbolic value," adding that "it works because it is operationalized into laws and policies".
According to De Schutter, "It then can provide a buffer against land-grabbing, over-exploitation of natural resources or unregulated investments, or against a form of development that is insufficiently participatory and inclusive."
