Nearly one million children under the age of five in Burundi are chronically malnourished, according to the UN Children's Fund.

UNICEF says 58 per cent of those children suffer from stunted growth, while acute malnutrition levels have reached 6 per cent.

Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world and the already fragile food situation in the country is compounded by weak harvests due to bad weather conditions.

The agency has several programmes in the country to help feed those in need, which are supported by the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

Julie Walker spoke with UNICEF's Burundi representative, Johannes Wedenig about the problem and what the agency is doing to help.
