Secretary-General highlights successes of Rio+20Listen /
The Rio+20 Conference marked the further evolution of a global movement for change, according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Addressing the General Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Ban labelled the conference a success, bringing together governments, civil society and the private sector.
The conference outcome document is entitled 'The Future We Want,' and Mr. Ban called it the foundation for the next stage towards sustainable development.
The Secretary-General also highlighted seven areas in the document, including the establishment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"The SDGs will build on our advances under the Millennium Development Goals, and they will be an integral part of the post-2015 development framework. The United Nations system will work closely with Member States to develop these SDGs, and the tools we will need to measure their success."
The Rio+20 Conference was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20 – 22 June.
