Rio+20 requires bold leadership:HeyzerListen /
Bold leadership and commitment are needed in choosing a development path that addresses the major global challenges of our times.
The head of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Noeleen Heyzer warns that "we are running out of time to make the changes that must be made".
She says that with two thirds of the world's population and a massive and growing demand for food, water, energy and other resources, sustainable development is of critical importance to the Asia-Pacific Region:
“The message from the countries of Asia and the Pacific is that getting it right means that Rio+20 must rebalance the pillars of sustainable development – ensuring that people are placed more firmly at the centre of the post-Rio+20 development agenda. It is time to reset global development, to forge a new development paradigm, and to find new engines of sustainable growth.”
