MINUSTAH military component helps restore rule of law and public safety in Haiti

Establishing the rule of law, restoring public safety and order, protecting of civilians and supporting the preservation of human rights are just some of gains made by the military component of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

Commander of the MINUSTAH Peacekeeping Force, Major-General Fernando Rodrigues Goulart, told the UN Security Council Wednesday that military units conduct regular joint operations with the UN Police –UNPOL and the Haitian National Police (HNP) forces to prevent crime and arrest criminals and gang members.

” Such joint operations have recently featured support for the HNP in its actions against ex-Haitian military and other elements who were threatening to organize themselves into a second armed force and questioning the authority of the Government. “
