The Academy Award winning actress and advocate Geena Davis has been appointed the Special Envoy for Women and Girls, for the UN's International Telecommunication Union. She will be a leading spokesperson for the Tech Needs Girls campaign and will promote the empowering role technology can play in the lives of women and girls.
Encouraging more mothers in Chad to breastfeed
An effort is underway in Chad to convince mothers of the importance of breastfeeding. The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, says the nutritional crisis in the African country is being compounded by one of the world’s lowest rates of breastfeeding – only three mothers out of every hundred exclusively breastfeed their children. The agency has been working with local health organizations to educate new mothers about the importance of breast feeding.
Girl Guides and Girl Scouts at the Rio+20 conference
A delegation of 24 young women from 15 different countries is in Brazil to represent the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts organizations, at the UN's conference on sustainable development, known as Rio+20. They are advocating for gender equality and non-formal education to be part of the final outcome document for the conference.
