A ministerial meeting on the Syrian crisis is to be held on Saturday June 30 in Geneva.

The meeting has been convened by the joint UN and Arab league special envoy Kofi Annan.

The permanent members of the UN Security council have been invited, along with some of Syria's neighbors including Turkey.

The meeting is being held amidst the intensification of the conflict in Syria, which has forced the United Nations Observer Mission (UNSMIS) in the country to suspend its monitoring.

"Today I have sent invitations to the Foreign Ministers of the five permanent members of the Security Council and other member states involved. The objectives of the Action Group for Syria are to identify steps and measures to secure full implementation of the six-point plan and Security Council resolutions 2042 and 2043, including an immediate cessation of violence in all its forms. The Action Group for Syria should agree on guidelines and principles for a Syrian-led political transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people; and to agree on actions that will make these objectives a reality on the ground."

Duration:  50″

Iran has not been invited because of objections by the United States, although the joint envoy has previously expressed his wish to see Iran involved in the Syrian peace effort.
