Global strategy to control foot-and-mouth disease
Listen /The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), are joining forces to combat foot-and-mouth disease on a global scale.
The organizations laid out a detailed strategy at the opening session of the FAO/OIE global conference in Bangkok Wednesday to bring the devastating livestock disease under control.
Julie Walker reports.
The Global Strategy combines two tools developed by FAO and the OIE. One evaluates national veterinary services with the aim of bringing them into compliance with OIE standards. The other helps countries better manage risks through steps including surveillance of foot-and-mouth (FMD) virus strains. The two organizations underlined, however, that only solid commitments from global partners will make the strategy possible. The global annual cost of FMD has been estimated to be approximately $5 billion dollars.
