Fighting terrorism takes more than traditional security approaches: Ban

stop terrorism

It takes more than traditional security approaches to counter terrorism…that was the message Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered Wednesday to a symposium at the United Nations.

Mr. Ban says that is why the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy places special emphasis on dialogue and understanding between communities.

He says governments must foster engagement between communities, and build tolerant and resilient societies that reject the hate-filled narratives of terrorists.

"We must also work together to extinguish the flames of hate and intolerance that breed terrorist violence. We know that social disharmony and a climate of intolerance for people defined as 'other' are simply out of step with our rapidly globalizing world."

Duration: 22"

The UN Symposium on Dialogue, Understanding and Countering the Appeal of Terrorism was organized by the President of the General Assembly in Partnership with the Counter Terrorism Implementation Task Force and United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute.
