Children in Syria used as human shields

Listen /

Displaced Syrians

Children as young as eight years are being used as human shields by the Syrian army, according to a United Nations report.

The UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy, says the children are being forcibly taken from their homes and placed in front of windows of buses carrying military personnel going to raid villages.

The report further says the schools are regularly raided, used as military bases and detention centres.

Ms. Coomaraswamy says children are suffering in Syria.

"What is horrific is that also we are having detention and torture of children and we are also having summary executions of children. That takes it to a whole another order. And so it's really quite horrific what's going on. Of course, it's not only the government, the opposition also we are a little concerned the Free Syrian Army is recruiting children. It seems to be not at the command level but at the field level." (Duration: 21")
