Ban urges international community to act with unity and collective will on Syria

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says with the fighting in Syria continuing, the international community must act with unity and collective will.

In a speech to the UN General Assembly Thursday he said the recent massacres in the country show there is little evidence that the Syrian government is living up to its commitments under the six-point peace plan.

Mr. Ban also said many elements of the opposition have turned to arms and declared that they will no longer respect the plan.

"The inability of either the regime or the opposition to engage in any meaningful political dialogue makes the prognosis extremely grave. And the longer this conflict goes on, the more difficult the path toward peace and eventual reconciliation will become. The international community must recognize these realities — and act, with unity and collective will."

The UN estimates that some 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Syria and tens of thousands displaced since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began more than a year ago.
