The panel was organized by the UN Global Compact which brings together the United Nations and the business community.
Departing Deputy Secretary-General reflects on her UN experience
As the first African woman to occupy the position of Deputy-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Asha-Rose Migiro is grateful for the opportunity she has had to be an inspiration to women and girls. In an interview with Joshua Mmali, Ms. Migiro gives credit to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for acknowledging the contributions both Africa and women can make to the work of the UN.
Ethiopia's "model family" policy could help slash child mortality rates
The child mortality rate in Ethiopia has dropped by half over the past decade, from 166 deaths to 88 deaths per 1,000 live births. But the country wants to cut this figure to less than 20 deaths per 1,000 live births by the 2035…or even sooner. Ethiopia is hoping the more than 34,000 women health extension workers will help achieve this goal. They are part of a strategy that creates "model families" who serve as role models and champions for good health practices.
