African counties need to diversify their economies

• African countries are being encouraged to restructure their economies to promote industrialization. In a report issued on Wednesday, UNCTAD says that Africa needs to use its abundant natural resources more efficiently. It says African countries must diversify their economies and stop relying on commodities for economic growth.

Sudanese refugees reluctant to leave Yida camp in South Sudan

• Fighting between Sudanese forces and rebels in the Nuba Mountains has  forced thousands of Sudanese refugees to flee to South Sudan. UNHCR says there are now 35,000 refugees sheltering at the Yida camp near the border. Many of the refugees at the camp who fled their homes in June last year, are reluctant to relocate further inland.

Sudanese NGO advocates for women at Rio+20

• Delegates have started to arrive in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development or Rio+20 next week. They include thousands of representatives of non-governmental organizations. One of the NGOs is ZENAB for Women in Development, a grassroots women's rights organization from Sudan.
