The UN agency which works with Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has welcomed a $817,000 contribution from the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent.

UNRWA says the funds will go towards assisting some of the most vulnerable families in Gaza, where more than half the population is partly dependent on international organizations for food.

Dianne Penn reports.

The contribution from the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent will support UNRWA's social safety-net programme which provides essentials such as flour, rice, oil, sugar and milk, to needy families.

UNRWA chief Filippo Grandi noted that five years of access restrictions have severely affected families in Gaza.

He said 62 per cent of the total population is dependent on aid agencies for at least some of its food.

With many Gazans relying on UNRWA food programmes, Grandi said securing funding is increasingly difficult and he welcomed the contribution which he described as "timely."
