UN supports African Union effort to stop LRA

• The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) of Uganda continues to terrorize people in Central Africa. The UN is helping the African Union (AU) to combat this group. The top UN official in Central Africa says the AU initiative is to mobilize some 5,000 to track down the LRA bandits and its leader Joseph Kony.

• Sub-Saharan Africa cannot sustain its present economic resurgence unless it eliminates hunger according to the UN Development Programme. UNDP argues in a newly released report that action focused on agriculture alone will not end food insecurity either. In Kenya, a community of Masaai have adapted to cultivating crops to survive.

• Close to 5 million people in South Sudan are at risk of going hungry this year, according to an assessment by food agencies and the country's government. They say food shortfalls have continued to worsen in the country. The anticipated cereal deficit of 473,000 metric tonnes will be the largest experienced by South Sudan in peacetime and represents more than twice last year's deficit.
