Syrian children seek shelter in doorway: UNICEF

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has strongly condemned the massacre of 108 people, including 49 children in El Houleh, Syria on Friday and Saturday

The Committee, which is holding its session in Geneva, says it is also alarmed at reports by United Nations observers of continued violence and killings of civilians.

Dianne Penn reports.

“The Committee says that most of the children who were killed in the El Houleh were under the age of 10.

In a statement issued on Thursday, it says it is deeply concerned that since the beginning of protests in Syria in March last year, hundreds of children have been killed, injured and detained.

Despite strong and repeated calls on the government and other parties to stop such violations, it adds, no action appears to have been taken.

The Committee urges the authorities in Syria to ensure that the perpetrators of the massacre at El Houleh and all those responsible for crimes against children are held accountable.
