UN chief warns of "catastrophic civil war" in Syria

Listen /

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

The massacre of civilians in Syria, similar to that of the 108 people killed in El Houleh last weekend, could plunge the country into a catastrophic civil war.

That warning has come from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who spoke at the UN Alliance of Civilizations forum in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday.

Mr Ban said the United Nations did not deploy monitors in Syria just to bear witness to what he called the "slaughter" of innocent people.

"We are not there to play the role of passive observer to unspeakable atrocities. The Joint Special Envoy Mr. Kofi Annan has expressed his concerns that we may have reached a tipping point in Syria, that the massacre of civilians of the sort seen last weekend could plunge Syria into a catastrophic civil war, a civil war from which the country will never recover."
