UN aid chief calls for continued international support to Afghanistan

Valerie Amos, UN Humanitarian Coordinator

As Afghanistan moves to assume full responsibility for its security, governance and development efforts, the international community is being urged not to forget the country's ongoing humanitarian needs.

That message comes from UN Humanitarian Coordinator Valerie Amos who is visiting the country.

She spoke to reporters in the capital, Kabul, on Wednesday.

"We have over five million people who have returned who were refugees; we have another five million who are outside the country as refugees, and we have a significant internal displacement issue. And one of the things I am keen to ensure is that in our ongoing partnership with the government of Afghanistan is we remember those people even as the transition period and the move to secure development takes place."

Ms. Amos is also supporting Afghan government efforts to respond to natural disasters, including implementing early warning systems.
