Syrian ambassador says regional powers "undermining" UN mission

Bashar Ja'afari, Permanent Representative of Syria to the UN

Regional and other countries have been deploying "huge efforts" to undermine the work of UN observers in Syria, the country's ambassador told journalists in New York on Tuesday.

Bashar Ja'afari stated there is what he called "a big conspiracy" against UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan.

“The big problem now, we are facing right now, is the smuggling of weapons sponsored by some Arab and regional and international powers into Syria. These weapons are used, as you know, to commit and perpetrate further murders in the country against civilians, as well as military.”

Kofi Annan on Tuesday briefed the Security Council about the situation in Syria in the wake of the cessation of violence that has been in effect since 12 April.

According to Ambassador Ja'afari, the Syrian government  “is still committed towards guaranteeing the maximum success" of Mr. Annan's mission.
