Over 1.5 billion people still live in conflict-affected countries

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

More than 1.5 billion people still live in conflict-affected countries despite a decline in violent conflict over the past 20 years, according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr. Ban addressed the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, a non-profit organization which develops policy initiatives in Washington D.C. on Monday.

He said peacebuilding is complex and needs to be more fully included in development cooperation.

"Peacebuilding is a work in progress. We are learning by doing. It is rarely linear. It requires great flexibility, and approaches tailored to a given situation. The violence within us, and within our societies, and among countries is not going to vanish anytime soon. But we are firmly committed to countering it at every turn, with every tool."
