Lebanon caught in Middle East "dance of death"

Listen /

Although Lebanon remains stable it is in a region which a top United Nations envoy has described as "at the brink of the abyss of war."

Terje Roed-Larsen, who oversees implementation of a Security Council resolution concerning Lebanon's sovereignty, briefed the Council on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists after the briefing, Mr. Roed-Larsen said it was vitally important for the United Nations to closely follow what is going on in the Middle East.

"What I reminded the Council of is what I ended my briefing one-and-a-half-years ago to the Council. I said then that the Middle East is today, one-and-a-half years ago, like a tent and the poles of that tent are swaying in the wind and a hurricane is blowing up. That hurricane came and the tent is down, and now what we see across the region is a dance of death at the brink of the abyss of war.  And one has to see the Lebanese situation in this regional context."
