A senior UN official is urging Israel to intervene and save the lives of Palestinian prisoners on a hunger strike.

The Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry made the appeal amid reports at least two of the prisoners are in critical condition.

Julie Walker reports.

In a statement, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process has asked the Israeli government to safeguard the health of prisoners who have been on a hunger strike for over two months.

More than 1,000 prisoners are refusing to eat, protesting what they say are unjust arrest procedures, arbitrary detention and bad prison conditions.

Robert Serry is calling on Israel to abide by its legal obligations under international law.
