The World Summit on the Information Society WSIS is taking place in Geneva this week.

One focus will be on reviewing progress made in bridging the digital divide, as well as setting goals beyond 2015.

Patrick Maigua reports from Geneva.

When the WSIS first took place in 2003, a Plan of Action was set out to bring 50 percent of the world’s population online by 2015.

At the second forum in 2005 a commitment was made to create an Internet Governance Forum for the Internet.

Now stakeholders from government, civil society and the private sector are meeting to agree on a review process to measure the progress made since then.

The event will also try to define strategies to help countries harness the power of information and communication technologies to accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals, now just three years away.
