Kofi Annan, Joint Special Envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States on the Syrian Crisis

The joint envoy of the United Nations and Arab League has urged President Bashar al-Assad of Syria to take "bold steps" to implement his six-point plan to resolve the crisis in the country.

Kofi Annan, who met with President Al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday morning, told reporters that he frankly conveyed the international community's concern about the violence in Syria.

The envoy's visit followed the killing of more than 100 civilians in the village of El-Houleh on Friday.

"We are at a tipping point. The Syrian people do not want their future to be one of bloodshed and division. Yet the killings continue and the abuses are still with us today. As I reminded the President, the international community will soon be reviewing the situation. I appealed to him for bold steps now – not tomorrow, now – to create momentum for the implementation of the plan."

Mr. Annan said this means that the Government and the militias it supports could stop all military operations and show maximum restraint.

He also appealed to the armed opposition in Syria to stop acts of violence.
