Envoy calls for support for Somalia as end of transition period approaches

Listen /

Augustine Mahiga

Somalia has made considerable advances as it prepares for the end of transitional governance in August, the top UN envoy in the country told the Security Council on Tuesday.

Dr. Augustine Mahiga, head of the UN Political Office for Somalia, said challenges remain in the months ahead, including a tight timeline and limited resources.

"As Somalia faces the greatest opportunity to end the transition, after so much investment by the international community, we must complete the tasks at hand. We must provide timely logistical and financial support to enable us to complete the implementation of the Roadmap before August this year, as well as strengthen international cooperation and coordination.”

Dr. Mahiga also commended the government of Turkey which will convene an international conference on Somalia in June.
