Combating violence against indigenous women and girls

Wayuu women, part of Colombia's largest indigenous group, support themselves with artisan work in the village of Pessuapa, near the border with Venezuela.

Indigenous women and girls suffer a disproportionate amount of gender related violence, according to a report from experts gathered at the UN for the 11th Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

They are calling on governments and UN agencies to support strategies to combat the problem. They also want to see more involvement between the indigenous communities and law enforcement, as well as better data collection on the issue.
