Margot Wallström, SRSG for sexual violence in conflict, hears NGOs claims for justice and end of impunity in Colombia

Colombian women are speaking up against sexual violence and want their government to fight impunity.

That's what Margot Wallström, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Conflict said Thursday on the first day of her visit to the South American country.

She met with members of non-governmental organizations who told her about many cases of violence, rape, sexual abuses and discrimination against women in the country.

“These women are very courageous, are very determined and they had decided to speak up although it carries a lot of risks. They engage for their families, for the children and for the future of this country, and it should be better recognized. And they want access to justice; they want to see justice done. I think that is the most important message to the government to fight impunity and to implement the laws that have been introduced".
