Annan stresses need for democratic transition in Syria

The joint United Nations-Arab League envoy for Syria has stressed the importance of finding a solution that will lead to a democratic transition in the country.

Kofi Annan spoke in Amman, Jordan, on Wednesday following talks with the country's prime minister and foreign minister on the ongoing crisis in Syria.

He said the situation in Syria is a very complex issue of great importance to all countries in the region and around the world.

Ahmad Fawzi is the spokesman for the joint envoy.

"We are working very hard to find a solution to the crisis, he said, and to ensure that the Syrian people don't continue to suffer. He said he thought it was very is important that we remind ourselves of their needs of the Syrian people and put them at the centre of everything that we do. It is their future, their livelihoods that are at stake. And it's important to find a solution, he said, that will lead to a democratic transition in Syria and find a way of ending the killings as soon as possible."

Mr. Annan thanked the government and people of Jordan for their generosity in receiving Syrian refugees who have fled the fighting in their country.
