UNESCO calls for harnessing power of science to benefit people

There is a need to harness the power of science for sustainable development, according to the head of the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Irina Bokova spoke in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday, where African ministers gathered to discuss how science, technology and innovation can create jobs for young people.

The conference in Nairobi discussed the education and training of people in Africa so that they can participate in and benefit from economic growth on the continent.

In her remarks, the head of UNESCO, Irina Bokova stressed the need for what she called "more effective linkages between science and policy".

She said science is the engine, fuel and accelerator for sustainable development.

Ms. Bokova said she will bring her message to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June this year.

The head of UNESCO visited Angola on Wednesday.
