UN pays tribute to late President Mutharika of Malawi

• The UN General Assembly this week paid tribute to late President Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi. Representatives of regional groups and the United States as the host country praised the late president for his role in fighting hunger and poverty in his country. President Mutharika passed away on 5 April 2012.

• Hostilities between Sudan and South Sudan are causing growing concern at the United Nations. Sudan bombed the town of Mayon last Sunday leaving at least seven people dead and several others wounded. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on the leaders of the two countries to immediately end the fighting.

Africa has history of violence says Tanzanian scholar

Dr. Lindah Mhando

• Violence remains a serious problem in Africa, according to a Tanzanian scholar. Dr. Lindah Mhando says the causes of violence include unemployment, the unequal distribution of resources and marginalization of women. She has edited a book entitled "Birthing Masculinity".
