The advance team of UN observers in Syria on Monday began setting up their headquarters in the country's capital, Damascus.

The six observers will monitor the days-old ceasefire proposed by UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan, in his peace plan for Syria.

Ahmad Fawzi, spokesman for Mr. Annan, says the monitors are also reaching out to the country's authorities to discuss their operations:

"They will be observers, unarmed observers, when we decide and when they decide where they will deploy. That's what they will do: they will observe the ceasefire and other elements of the six-point plan."

The advance team, which arrived on Sunday, is headed by a Moroccan colonel. It is expected that as many as 250 monitors will be dispatched to Syria.

The Security Council authorized the deployment of the advance team in a unanimous vote on Saturday.
