UN condemns military coup in Guinea-Bissau

The UN Security Council as well as the Secretary-General have condemned the coup in Guinea-Bissau and urged all parties to refrain from violence.

US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, who is Council President this month says the military in the West African country arrested the Prime Minister, as well as the acting President.

In a press statement council members called for their immediate release and demanded restoration of constitutional order.

"The Secretariat urged the international community to address the cycle of violence and impunity in Guinea-Bissau. The members of the Security Council condemned the military action and urged the immediate restoration of civilian authority."

The coup took place Thursday night, by Friday the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau reported that things were calmer in the West African country.

This comes just two weeks before a presidential election runoff.
