UN chief calls for action against human traffickers

human traffickers targeted

Human traffickers have no place in the world the international community is striving to build.

That's the message delivered by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to a meeting on fighting human trafficking held in New York on Tuesday.

Mr. Ban called on all governments to combat human trafficking while adhering to international human rights standards.

"Where traffickers use threats and weapons, we must respond with laws and prosecutions. At the same time, we have to take a broad view of the factors that feed trafficking. Only the worst, most abject poverty could force a family to sell their child for a few dollars. We have to help all those who live in such desperate conditions. They need more than simple promises – they need social protections."

Tuesday's meeting on human trafficking was attended by senior United Nations officials and experts in the fight against human trafficking.
