Security Council warns of new sanctions against North Korea

Listen /

US Ambassador Susan E. Rice

The Security Council on Monday unanimously adopted a presidential statement which provides for new sanctions against North Korea.

This follows the country's failed launch last week of a so-called "application satellite" which the council has strongly condemned.

United States ambassador Susan Rice is the Security Council president for April:

"The Security Council directed its North Korea Sanctions Committee to designate additional North Korean entities including companies to be subject to an asset freeze, as well as to identify additional proliferation-sensitive technology to be banned for transfer to and from North Korea."

Ms. Rice said the United States will soon propose a "robust package of new designations" to the Sanctions Committee.

She said it will include the names of companies responsible for the North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, as well as technical items.
