Security Council urges Syria to implement its commitments

The Security Council has urged Syria to urgently implement all the commitments it has made to withdraw its forces from populated areas by 10 April.

The Security Council met on Thursday, after Syria told the Joint United Nations-Arab League Special Envoy, Kofi Annan, that it had started withdrawing its troops from civilian areas.

The President of the Security Council during the month of April is Ambassador Susan Rice of the United States.

"The Security Council calls upon the Syrian government to implement urgently and visibly its commitments as it agreed to do in its communication to the envoy of 1 April to a: cease troop movements towards population centres, b: cease all use of heavy weapons in such centres and c: begin pull back of military concentrations in an around population centres and to fulfil these in their entirety by not later than 10 April 2012."

The Security Council also called on all parties, including the opposition to stop all forms of armed actions within 48 hours of the implementation by the Syrian government of the measures outlined.
