The Security Council has called for Guinea-Bissau to return to constitutional order following a military coup last week.

The council also demanded the immediate release of the country's interim president, prime minister and other officials who have been held in detention.

United States ambassador Susan Rice is Security Council president for April:

"The Security Council welcomes the decision of the African Union Peace and Security Council to suspend with immediate effect Guinea-Bissau from the AU until the effective restoration of constitutional order. The Security Council underlines need to ensure the safety and security of those detained and that those responsible for violent and acts must be held responsible."

Both the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General have strongly condemned the coup which took place ahead of a presidential election run-off scheduled for 22 April.
