UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has recommended the establishment of a UN Supervision Mission for Syria.

It is to comprise 300 military observers supported by a civilian component.

Mr. Ban spoke to journalists following a closed door meeting of the Security Council on Thursday.

"This is not a decision without risk. But I believe it can contribute to achieving a just peace and political settlement, reflecting the people's will in Syria. A supervision mission with a clear mandate and the required capacities under the right conditions would contribute to improving the situation on the ground."

Mr. Ban said for the mission to succeed, the full cooperation of the Syrian government will be required, particularly with regards to the freedom of movement and access of its personnel, as well as their safety and security.
