The Security Council's adoption of a resolution to deploy monitors to Syria has been welcomed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy for Syria, Kofi Annan.

"We were both very relieved and happy that the council has passed a unanimous resolution authorizing the deployment of the observers and we will try to get them in there as quickly as possible.”

The two officials met in Geneva on Saturday evening.

Mr. Annan briefed Mr. Ban on the efforts to secure full implementation of his six-point peace plan for Syria, and to launch a political process that would address the concerns and aspirations of the country's people.

On Saturday the Security Council unanimously voted to send an advance team of up to 30 observers to Syria.
