Exhibition on the genocide of Rwanda during International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda

Victims of the genocide in Rwanda are being remembered by the United Nations.

It was in 1994 that extremist Hutus massacred about 800,000 people, mainly Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

This year's theme is "learning from history to shape a bright future" and in a video message Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon says Rwanda has done just that.

"The International Criminal Court has become an effective deterrent for would-be perpetrators of grave crimes. And to those who persist in suppressing their fellow citizens who cry out for dignity and freedom, we send a clear message: justice will be done.  "

The United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda delivered the first-ever verdicts in relation to genocide by an international court, and continues to pursue justice and accountability.
