Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commended the continued efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to help restore constitutional order in Mali.

His spokesman Martin Nesirsky says there are two tracks being addressed, the need to restore constitutional order and need to restore territorial integrity. He says some progress has been made on the former.

"Work remains to be done on the question of territorial integrity and what's happened in the north of Mali. I don't think we should prejudge what may or may not happen given that the mediator and his team it continues to work and the regional organization will be meeting to discuss what further steps might be necessary."

Last month, rebel Malian soldiers took control of the country and announced the dissolution of the Government led by President Amadou Toumani Toure.

Since then, Mr. Ban and the Security Council have repeatedly called for restoration of constitutional rule and have expressed their concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country.
