Syria is allowing the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to expand its humanitarian work in the country according to the aid agency.

The ICRC also says the Syrian government has agreed to halt fighting in order for the humanitarian organization to evacuate the wounded.

The agreement was reached when ICRC president Jakob Kellenberger visited Damascus last week.

Rabab Al-Rifai is ICRC spokesperson in Damascus.

“Today our teams have delivered this morning over 1,700 food parcels. They have also taken with them mattresses, also over 1,700 of them. There are towels, there are candles depending on the needs. The mattresses are for many of the people who have been hosted by friends or relatives who need a place to sleep or lie down there.”

The ICRC has about 70 people in Syria who have delivered relief supplies to heavily hit cities including Homs, Idlib and Deraa.
