Humanitarian disaster looms in Sahel region of West Africa
Listen /• A disaster is in the making in the Sahel region of Africa plagued by drought and conflict. UN agencies estimate that 15 million people don't have enough food. They warn that approximately 1.5 million children are on the brink of starvation. The agencies say that only half of the $724 million required to respond to the crisis has been received.
Human rights violations are rife in northern Mali
•There are human rights violations in northern Mali, according to the UN human rights chief, Navi Pillay. She says she is alarmed by these violations which include killings, robberies and rape. Ms Pillay is calling for action to stop the violations.
Survivor of Rwanda genocide helps others in the United States
•The UN this week remembered the 1994 genocide in Rwanda when extremist Hutus massacred about 800,000 people, mainly Tutsis and moderate Hutus. This year's theme is "learning from history to shape a bright future". A survivor of the genocide who now lives in the United States is helping others.
