Greater investment needed to help people with autism

Autism Day

More investments in the social, education and labour sectors are crucially important to tackle the health challenge of autism.

That's the message from UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon on World Autism Awareness Day observed on 2 April each year.

He said the day is observed to spur action and draw attention to what he called "the unacceptable discrimination, abuse and isolation experienced by people with autism and their loved ones."

The Secretary-General said autism is not limited to a single region or a country but a worldwide challenge that requires global action.

Millions of children around the world are affected by autism which is a developmental disorder that impairs a child's social interaction and communication.
