Earthquake rocks Indonesia; UN ready to assist

A powerful earthquake has hit just southwest of Simeuleu District in Aceh province Indonesia, triggering a tsunami warning.

The Indonesian Meteorological agency registered it at 8.9 on the Richter scale.

So far there were no reports of major damage and a tsunami has not occurred.

OCHA Chief in Jakarta, Ignacio Leon Garcia says the United Nations is ready to assist the country if needed.

"Population has fled to higher ground and will be there for I can imagine for a longer time because you have several after shocks during the last few hours."
