Ban Ki-moon

Continued violence in Syria has been strongly condemned by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Secretary-General says the situation is unacceptable and must stop immediately.

The violence is happening as the UN prepares to deploy 300 unarmed observers that were authorized by the Security Council.

Charles Appel reports.

The Secretary-General says he is gravely alarmed by reports of continued violence and killings, including shelling and explosions in various residential areas, as well as armed clashes.

Mr. Ban strongly condemns the continued repression of the Syrian people and the violence from all parties.

He demands that the Syrian government comply with its commitments to withdraw heavy weapons, military equipment and army personnel in populated areas.

The Secretary-General reminds all parties, particularly the government, of the need to ensure that conditions for the effective operation of the UN Military Observers, are put in place immediately.

He says these conditions should include a sustained cessation of armed violence. Charles Appel, United Nations
