Apparent military coup in Guinea-Bissau

The military in Guinea-Bissau has reportedly taken control of the West African country.

The apparent coup comes just two weeks before a presidential election runoff.

Vladimir Monteiro, the spokesperson for the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau says Thursday night, gunfire and fighting could be heard, but by Friday the situation there was very different.

"Bissau is very calm, except the market of fish which was crowded this morning. The streets are basically empty you can see some groups of persons listening to the radio, basically the Portuguese radio, to try to know more about the news."

Brazil's Ambassador to the UN, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti who is also the Chair of the Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission wants the Security Council to act.

"The members of the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries) are consulting and have requested an urgent meeting of the Security Council to condemn in the strongest possible terms the military intervention that took place in Guinea-Bissau."
