$380 billion lost in disasters in 2011

In Bangladesh, an innovative "disaster resilient village" was built in Shymnagar for a coastal village wiped out after Cyclone Aila.

2011 was the worst year on record for economic losses from disasters.

That's according to the UN Officer for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), which says these losses totaled $380 billion.

On Wednesday the office launched an online Local Government Self-Assessment Tool.

It allows cities to identify gaps in planning and investing for risk reduction.

And for the first time, governments will also be able to submit data for national progress reports.
