Reports of severe cases of drug resistant tuberculosis or TB are increasing said experts who attended a World Health Organization (WHO) meeting in Geneva.

The group is urging the global health community to make greater efforts to prevent drug resistance and scale up provision of appropriate care and management to avoid a scenario where TB becomes incurable.

Still, this information is not enough for the WHO to redefine drug resistant TB, according to Dr. Mario Raviglione, the Director of the Organization's Stop TB Department.

“We are not in a situation as WHO to recommend a new definition of totally drug resistance in fact the reason is that the reliability of the testing today that we have available is not sufficient to allow us to compare results from one place to another and therefore we can not really recommend a global definition of this type.”

Saturday marks world TB day.
