A technical team from the office of the UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy for Syria will be in Damascus this weekend.

Kofi Annan made the announcement in Geneva on Friday after briefing the Security Council via teleconference about his recent meetings with President Bashar al-Assad in efforts to bring an end to the crisis in Syria.

"I will be sending a team in this weekend to pursue the discussions and the proposals we left on the table, and at the appropriate time when I deem sufficient progress has been made, I shall be prepared to go back to the region."

Syrian Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said his country is committed to making Mr. Annan's mission a success.

Mr. Kofi Annan assured the members of the Security Council that the Syrian government is engaged with him positively speaking in order to make his mission a successful one. I would like to assure you that on behalf of my government, Syria is committed to making Mr. Annan's mission successful.”

Mr. Annan had also met with the Turkish Prime Minister and other regional actors during his two-day mission.
